'He deserves better': Man pleads his spouse to adopt a doggo, but after bringing him home, he realizes he's "not a dog person" and wants to give the poor pupper away

The only thing worse than adopting a dog and not being able to keep it, is adopting a dog and then not wanting to keep it.

How many times must we say it before y'all get it through your heads? Dogs are a lot of work. They are absolutely worth all of the work that they require, but if you want a low-maintenance and cleaner animal, get a teacup pig or a cat. Dogs get dirty. They roll in the mud. They eat trash on the street. They shed all year round. You have to take these things into account when you're thinking of adopting one.

In our post today, you'll find a pawfect example of someone who was unprepared for the realities of living with a dog before getting one, and now the dog is paying the price. They begged their spouse to adopt a dog, but as soon as they got it, they realized they didn't like it. They didn't like the fur everywhere, the training, or even the quality time you're supposed to enjoy with the dog. So now, they have to rehome the dog, and we only feel sorry for this poor pupper who didn't do anything wrong except be a normal dog.

Dogs are a huge commitment that will change your life. You'll wake up early every day for a few years, have to schedule around 2-3 hours a day for walks and playtime, but in return, you get the most loyal friend you've ever had. One who's always happy to see you when you come home, and just wants to be next to you, even while they're sleeping. This doggo disaster is one we hope never gets repeated.

    Recently just rehome my old dog back with me after I had to give him up due to surgery. Long story short people that had him could no longer afford him so I pleaded with my spouse to bring him home to avoid the pound.

    I do not like the fur everywhere, i vacuum everyday multiple times a day. I sometimes get agitated although he is only doing what's in his nature. He follows my around like my shadow, when I try to walk him so he is tired all he wants to do is mark over and over just pee on everything. He licks the floor, other dogs butt and etc which absolutely disgusts me.

  • This description sounds like a perfectly normal, but untrained, dog. The good thing about dogs is that they are relatively easy to train! You can teach them how to be the best boys pawssible, but you have to put in the work to get there. Nothing good in life comes for free!

    A A is I were to rehome him? I feel like he deserves to be with someone who not only love him but loves dogs as well. Everyone keeps telling me to stick with it and it will get better but i don't agree

    Wankyudo YTA. That's a title you need to accept in this situation because you pushed for the dog, got the dog, and now you don't want the dog. Every rehome does damage to a dog's psyche. They aren't something that you can just...pick up and then change your mind. It's inconsiderate, and it's damaging.

    You still should rehome him because it'll be even more damaging having an owner who clearly is incapable of loving him; and don't ever arbitrarily get a pet just because.

    LillithVee As someone who isn't a dog person myself, I don't think you're an asshole, but you do have the responsibility to do your best to find a truly loving home where this dog can have someone who's happy to take good care of it.

    Keeping the dog with you will likely lead to exhaustion and frustration, and in the long run that won't be good for anyone, the dog included. It deserves better, so keep taking care of it for now and, in the meantime, try to find a loving family for it.

  • This person is right, they definitely shouldn't keep the dog. Doggos are sensitive and can sense when something is wrong. They'll never build a loving, trustworthy relationship this way, so it's best to just cut your losses and move on. We're just sorry that the dog is the one who has to get the short end of the stick here, especially when it wasn't his fault.

    toospicy4thepepper3 YTA always do your research before allowing any animal into your life. Especially when you pleaded with your spouse to let them into your home.

    But you should try local facebook groups to see if anyone wants him or start asking around work if anyone else would like to home the pupper. Otherwise look into no-☑I shelters as a last resort in your area

    Are you saying that they loved him and he loved them? That they really wanted to keep him if only they had the resources to do so?

    If so, why not let them adopt him and you pay "child support"? That way he gets to be where he is loved by people who love him. Perhaps you could visit sometimes and get updates about him.

    OkTadpole2920 Maybe, but at least you are doing the essentials. Dogs enjoy walks because they get to smell everything and leave their own scent for other animals, that is actually the most part of the walk for them. So I'm afraid that the slow walk is also essential.

If i could put pics in the comment i would but also i do not care about negative comments. I'm real enough to acknowledge that the dog deserves more and that my home isn't the most beneficial for him.
